Thanks to the generous support of the Cornell University Biotechnology Program, CIBT has over 30 kits and models that have been developed for use in classrooms. Teachers who have participated in our summer institutes and in regional workshops can borrow kits FREE of CHARGE! The kits are shipped from our Ithaca location to the school and back. Local teachers are encouraged to contact us for pickup before or after school.

  • Only active CIBT alumni may request kits via the new on-line system. Active alumni are alumni that have participated in a CIBT workshop or Return to Campus event within the last three years.
  • All kits must be reserved two weeks in advance of when you will need them.
  • You need to have specific training to borrow the DNA Electrophoresis, Protein Gel Electrophoresis, PCR, and Wolbachia kits. We offer workshops for equipment training several times a year.
  • You can still reserve multiple kits, but each individual kit must be reserved separately.
  • You are taking responsibility for the contents of the kits. Failure to return to the kit in good condition, late or without a survey may result in loss of privileges.
  • You must fill out the survey and content lists included with the kits.

Protein Gel Electrophoresis - High School (ONLY TRAINED TEACHERS CAN RESERVE THIS KIT)

IMPORTANT: ONLY TEACHERS WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINED IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE 'USING PROTEIN GEL ELECTROPHORESIS TO STUDY EVOLUTION' LAB CAN BORROW THIS KIT.

ATTENTION: Due to loss of funding CIBT no longer provides the protein gels required for this lab. Teachers can order these directly through Wards Scientific. The required gels are 4-12% TRYS-GLYS.

Using this kit, students separate a mixture of proteins from skeletal muscle using SDS polyacrylamide gels. While analyzing and comparing protein bands according to their molecular weights on the gel, they try to establish evolutionary relatedness among different groups.

This kit includes:

  • 2 vertical gel boxes with tray inserts and stands
  • 1 power supply
  • 1 dry bath heater
  • 1 thermometer
  • 4 staining trays
  • Bottles Tris-SDS solubilization buffer (Laemmli buffer)
  • Packages Tris-Gly-SDS running buffer
  • Bottles protein fixative/stain
  • Bag of 15 mL test tubes
  • 4 test tube racks
  • 4 microfuge tube racks
  • Bag of 1.6 mL microfuge tubes
  • 1 buffer dam
  • 4 pipettes
  • 2 boxes of P20 tips
  • 1 loading guide
  • 4 plastic stirring rods
  • 1 lab notebook
  • 1 vial high molecular weight markers (100 µL per 4 gels)

Teachers must supply:

  • 1 polyacrylamide gel per 4 students
  • Various meats
  • Disposable gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Markers
  • Tape
  • Razor blades or scalpels
  • 500 mL or 1 L flask or beaker
  • Plastic cutting boards
  • Clinical centrifuge, or funnel with cheesecloth
