Equipment Lending Library

Equipment Lending Library

Thanks to the generous support of the Cornell University Biotechnology Program, CIBT has over 30 kits and models that have been developed for use in classrooms. Teachers who have participated in our summer institutes and in regional workshops can borrow kits FREE of CHARGE! The kits are shipped from our Ithaca location to the school and back. Local teachers are encouraged to contact us for pickup before or after school.

  • Only active CIBT alumni may request kits via the new on-line system. Active alumni are alumni that have participated in a CIBT workshop or Return to Campus event within the last three years.
  • All kits must be reserved two weeks in advance of when you will need them.
  • You need to have specific training to borrow the DNA Electrophoresis, Protein Gel Electrophoresis, PCR, and Wolbachia kits. We offer workshops for equipment training several times a year.
  • You can still reserve multiple kits, but each individual kit must be reserved separately.
  • You are taking responsibility for the contents of the kits. Failure to return to the kit in good condition, late or without a survey may result in loss of privileges.
  • You must fill out the survey and content lists included with the kits.

Plant Game - Middle/High School

This kit provides teachers with all the materials needed to implement CIBT's Plant Game, a fun and exciting activity that shows students how plants grow.

In the Plant Game, teams of students "grow a plant" composed of "leaves," "roots," and "flowers." The goal of the game is to produce a maximum number of flowers. This is only possible if students have a good strategy to keep their "roots" in water and produce enough "leaves" to support adequate photosynthesis. Students "grow their plant" in a graduated cylinder, in which paper clip "roots" dangle in water. Measured amounts of water are added to and removed from the system by "rainfall" and "transpiration," respectively, which are determined according to a roll of the dice. The game ends when another roll of the dice indicates a "frost." Since the rate of growth for each student’s plant is limited by the "weather" and by students’ choices in how they allocate their fixed carbon, a few repetitions of the game clearly demonstrate the functions of leaves, roots, and flowers, and some environmental stresses on plants.

The kit includes:

  • 10 plastic bags, each with one complete set of game pieces:
    • 25 flower cards
    • 20 leaf cards
    • 25 paper clips
    • 1 wooden dowel
    • 1 1 mL pipette
  • 10 100 mL plastic graduated cylinders
  • 10 50 mL plastic beakers
  • 12 10 mL pipettes
  • 10 dice
  • Bag of extra supplies
  • Lab Manual
