Monday, November 7, 2005

The Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers will be presenting sessions at the STANYS annual conference.

Schedule of Events

9:30 - 10:30
11:00 - 12:00
Session B-27 and C-27: Measuring Behavior - Mike Yerky
An introduction to the methods and design of behavioral studies. Hands-on work with video clips of chimpanzees using scoring sheets. Lab available on CD-ROM from CIBT.
11:00 - 12:00 Session C-26: Dissection of a Pregnant Cow Reproductive Tract - Jeanne Raish
In this activity, developed by CIBT, participants will dissect part of the pregnant reproductive tract of a cow and make comparisons between human and bovine anatomy. We will also cover fetal development and the menstrual cycle in these labs.
The latest version of these labs are available in the Lab Database.
1:45 - 2:45 Session D-07: Plant Labs for Grades K-6 - Alan Seidman and Jackie Garelick
Bring plants into your elementary classroom. We will learn the basics of tree identification and we will do a series of Core based activities in plant anatomy and physiology.

Plant Dissection Activities
1:45 - 2:45 Session D-26: Sequencing a Genome - Robert Suran
The human genome is 3.2 billion base pairs long, while DNA sequencing machines only sequence 650 base pairs at a time. Join CIBT for a pencil-and-paper simulation of some of the techniques that researchers used to surmount the enormous size of the human genome.
